The lower bridge is the Royal Albert Bridge, designed by the legendary Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1859. Considered one of Brunel's greatest engineering achievements, it still carries the Great Western Railway between Devon and Cornwall more than 160 years later.
Alongside it stands the Tamar Bridge, opened in 1961 to carry road traffic across the River Tamar. Together, these two bridges symbolise the historic and modern connections between Devon and Cornwall and remain among the South West's most recognisable landmarks.
